Staff Information -

COVID in NY State

In just a few weeks we will safely bring our Lokanda Family back together and we couldn't be more excited!  We have gained so much knowledge, data, and information about COVID-19 throughout this past year and are paving the path to a safe and fun summer for all of our campers and staff.  As expected, we have made some modifications to our plans to align with changing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the American Camp Association, and the New York State Department of Health. It is still likely that we will need to continue to adjust some protocols over the next few weeks as guidelines change. We are so pleased that vaccinations have become available to those 12 years of age and over and encourage all those who can, to do so as soon as possible.  With your support we are looking forward to a safe, healthy and happy summer.  As always feel free to reach out to us directly with any questions.

Staff COVID Vaccinations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that camp workers be deemed as essential workers for COVID vaccination purposes. We highly recommend all Camp Lokanda staff members be vaccinated for COVID in time for camp this summer. While we know that may be easier to obtain in some states and countries than others, we are issuing Staff Employment Letters that may assist you with obtaining a COVID vaccine for the summer.

Staff Testing

• Pre Camp Testing: All staff will need to have a negative COVID - PCR test, taken within 3 days prior to the their arrival at camp. You should look into free COVID-PCR testing in your area, and submit your results via CampInTouch. If you test positive for COVID on your Pre Camp PCR Test, please contact us immediately and you will need to follow CDC and camp guidelines for quaranteening before coming to camp. IMPORTANT: If you had COVID within 90 days of your start date at camp, you will still need to provide us with a pre camp COVID test result. • Arrival Testing: Upon arrival at our staff meet up location at JFK airport, ALL staff will be tested for COVID. There will be no cost to staff for this test. Anyone testing positive will need to follow CDC and camp guidelines for quarantine at your expense. After quarantine, you will be able to join us at camp. • Pre-Camper Arrival Testing: ALL staff will be retested for COVID prior to the arrival of our campers. There will be no cost to staff for this test. Anyone testing positive will need to follow CDC and camp guidelines for quarantine at camp. • Post-Camper Arrival Testing: ALL staff and campers will be retested for COVID about Day 5 of camp. There will be no cost to staff for this test. Anyone testing positive will need to follow CDC and camp guidelines for quarantine at camp.

Staff Arrival Info

All staff will need to fly into JFK Airport on their Employment Start Date (see your Employment Agreement located on CampInTouch.) We will be gathering at an airport hotel banquet room (additional information on the exact location will be sent as we get closer to camp). The optimal arrival time to fly into JFK is 10 am to 3 pm EST. If you find your only flight arrival time is outside this window, please contact staffing@lokanda.com prior to booking your flight. You will be greeted by our staff at the airport hotel banquet room where we will have snacks and drinks for you to enjoy. We will be conducting your arrival COVID test at that time. From there, camp will provide bus transportation to camp, which is approximately 2 hours away. If you are driving, you will need to meet us at the airport hotel between 10 am and 3 pm for your arrival COVID test before heading to camp unless you receive permission to go directly to camp. Camp will reimburse you for your parking at the airport.

Staff Housing at Camp

Upon arrival at camp, you will be housed in temporary staff orientation housing with ensuite bathrooms. You will be able to contact your family to let them know you arrived safely. We have an exciting and fun orientation program planned that will get you ready for the campers arrival and the summer!

Staff Time and Days Off

As a result of the multiple tests we will be conducting for our campers and staff, we are very confident that we will be able to create a safe and Covid-free campus at Lokanda. Once everyone arrives, we will have a more controlled campus at Lokanda in order to mitigate the risk of COVID coming in. This would mean that our staff will need to remain on camp grounds throughout the summer including days off. As a result, we are creating many areas around camp for our staff to enjoy during their time off. In addition to our on-site staff lounge, there will be other spaces at Lokanda for our staff to recharge, relax and spend time with their peers during their time off. We are even expanding our wi-fi capabilities to reach more areas. We will also have fun social and sports activities for staff time off including staff sports nights, movies, trivia games, etc. Ultimately, the final decision of what our controlled campus will look like will be made in the upcoming weeks with the utmost concern for camper and staff safety.

Before Arriving at Camp

You will see that we are taking lots of precautions to mitigate risk to our entire camp community and make sure you are safe. This includes testing and other measures before you arrive, when you arrive and during your time at Lokanda. One of the most important aspects in making this work is what you do before you actually leave for camp. In addition to the pre-camp testing, we are asking you to limit your interactions to your current co-hort (family or people) that you've been interacting with throughout this pandemic. This includes not going out with large groups before leaving and not arriving to the New York area a few days before to spend time in New York City or see friends. You will need to arrive the day stated as the beginning of your Employment Agreement. It is so important for everyone at camp that you are extra careful in the 7-10 days prior to your arrival. We are all counting on each other to make this summer the safest and best summer ever!
