Camp Lokanda is a private camp and
has been around since 1937. It is one of the premier
camps in New York. It has been owned and run by the
Diamond family for most of it's existence.
-
Lokanda is an American Camping
Association (ACA) accredited camp, which means
that it conforms to a very high standard. Very few camps
receive such an honor.
-
Lokanda is a Co-ed sleep away camp.
We have around 450 campers ranging from 6 to 17. Most
campers come from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and
Florida.
-
We have around 250 staff coming from
all corners of the globe. We have a return rate of over
65% and on average most staff stay for at least 3
summers. We have over a 90% return rate on senior staff,
and an unparalleled staff return rate and longevity of
service.
-
Lokanda is a very special place, it's
hard to put into word, so we have to let the numbers do
the talkin.... We have over a 95% camper return rate,
and on average campers come for seven consecutive
summers. In summer camps today, this is a very rare
achievement.
-
Lokanda believes that children have
different needs at different ages. We therefore break
the camp into 3 unique age ranges. Our 7-10 years olds
live on Lower Campus. Our 11-13 year olds live on Middle
campus, and our oldest campers live on Upper Campus. We
then break each campus down into a number of smaller
divisions based on age. Together in your
interview, we will decide which age group you are best
suited to be with.
-
You will be living in modern wooden
cabins which we call bunks. All bunks have built in
bathrooms and electricity. We have fans and exhaust fans
to keep the bunks cool.
-
Each bunk will have between 8-12
campers of the same age and 2-3 staff members. There will usually be two
counselors and one semi-specialist living in each bunk.
-
As a counselor you will spend your day
going to different activities with campers. As a
Semi-specialist you will spend your day at an activity
teaching different campers, and at all other times you
will be back on your campus with your campers.
-
Lokanda believes in the importance of
training. You will arrive about a week before the
campers do. In this time you will receive training from
some of the top child care & camping specialist in
America. You will also spend this time having fun,
making yourself at home, preparing for the campers, and making new friendships.
-
We believe the welfare of our staff
is important. At Lokanda we have the following
facilities for our staff : Medical center, Laundry,
Staff Lounge, canteen, internet services, inter-camp
games, weekly staff meetings, camp facilities open to
staff at night (all sports areas have lights for night
games), banking / post office, a safe for your valuables,
and staff trips.
