What kind of food do you serve?

At Lokanda we serve balanced meals with an emphasis on the less fatty items. We serve a large amount of hand-sliced fresh fruits and vegetables at every meal but we are also realists and so our menu is geared to the kinds of foods kids enjoy eating.

Although we are not a "nut free" camp, we do not use nuts or peanut oil in our cooking or baking. Campers who choose to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a substitute, have their sandwiches made in a separate area. There are no peanut butter jars on our tables.

Our kitchen staff, Head Counselors and Group Leaders are alerted to the needs of those campers who require a special diet, those campers who have food allergies, or campers who are lactose intolerant. We then make sure that they are eating the right foods at every meal.

Is your food kosher or kosher style?

Camp Lokanda has been a kosher camp since we opened our doors in 1937 and we have kept it that way ever since. All of our meat is 100% kosher, we do not serve dairy products and meat at the same meal, we maintain separate refrigerators for the two as well as separate dishes and silverware.

My kid is a picky eater. How do you deal with that at Lokanda?

The Head Counselors of our Lower Camp do not eat when their campers are in the dining room. Instead, they circulate among the tables to see that everyone else is eating. When they find that a camper who seems to be picking at the food on his plate, they will quickly suggest a substitute that the camper might prefer.

At Lokanda, substitutes are offered at every meal, so you can feel confident that your child will certainly find something good to eat. Head Counselors and group leaders regularly offer sandwiches, pasta, fresh sliced fruit, yogurt and a wide range of pre-prepared items that our chef has "standing by."

Can I send food up to camp?

No candy, water, or food of any kind may be sent to camp. Those packages will be returned to our parents at their expense.

Our campers have three full meals each day and they either visit the canteen or get milk and cookies at night before going to bed. If a child should suddenly get hungry in the middle of the afternoon, they can come into their Head Counselor's cabin and select a piece of fresh fruit as a snack.

I want my child to drink bottled water. Can that be arranged?

Yes. The canteen is open every day after lunch and your child is more than welcome to come in and pick up one or more bottles of water. The cost of the water will be deducted from your child's Personal Account Fund.
