Camp Lokanda is located in Glen Spey, New York, approximately 2 hours from New York City. We are nestled in the scenic Catskill Mountains on beautiful Lake Loch Ada, not far from the Delaware River.
Our campers primarily come from New York, New Jersey and Florida. Camp Lokanda’s camper return rate is 90-95% each year. We have about 450 campers split evenly between boys and girls. We pride ourselves on our return rate and the fact that we are able to retain our campers well into their teen years. We have more than 50 CITs who are 10th and 11th grade students.
There are four things that really make Lokanda extra special.
Lokanda divides its boys and girls campers into three distinct campuses – Lower Camp (grades 1-4), Middle Camp (grades 5-6), and Upper Camp (grades 7 and up). Each campus is led by an experienced Head Counselor (three on boys camp and three on girls camp) who is an expert with the age group he or she supervises. Our Head Counselors are very involved with the activities of the campers and even hire their own staff. This is unique in camping!
We have created “Club Lokanda” so that camp is a year-round experience. Club Lokanda is a series of get-togethers throughout the school year, which enables campers to meet other new and returning campers, as well as staff members. Our Club Lokanda events are held in the New York area and in Florida.
At Lokanda, we have developed “The Lokanda Way,” which is all about how we expect campers and staff members to interact with each other – with respect, caring and helpfulness. That’s the Lokanda Way and you can feel it all around camp!
We pride ourselves with our open lines of communication and parents are encouraged to contact Head Counselors and Directors with any questions they may have. Our Head Counselors are available to parents year round and their phone numbers and e-mail addresses are listed on our website.
A typical day consists of 3 morning activities and 3 afternoon activities. We have a rest hour after lunch for campers to go back to their bunks and relax and recharge. After dinner we have a supervised free play period.
Our program consists of team and individual sports, outdoor adventure, creative and performing arts, and pool and lake activities. There is an option period each day for Lower Camp and two option periods for Middle and Upper Camp. Every activity is led by specialists who have skills and experience in leading that activity.
We have many special events including carnival, DJ parties, theatrical productions, Friday night services, and camper and counselor talent shows.
Our staff members hail from across the United States, Canada, and even from overseas. Many of our staff members are former campers who have grown up at Lokanda. New staff members are very often recommended by returning staff. Lokanda has an excellent return of staff members, and in fact, among our leadership staff, including Head Counselors, Group Leaders and heads of activities, our return is typically over 90%. All staff members must have completed at least one year of college, unless they have been a CIT for two years at Lokanda.
The food at Lokanda is excellent. We offer a wide variety of well-balanced choices and substitutes are available at each meal. At lunch and dinner we always have salad bars and once a week we have an outdoor barbeque. At Lokanda, we pay close attention to special dietary needs and food allergies. Camp Lokanda has been a kosher camp since we opened our doors in 1937.
We have three co-ed Dining Rooms, one each for Lower, Middle and Upper Camp. The service in each dining room is age appropriate. Our Lower Camp is served family style, Upper Camp buffet style, and our Middle Camp has a mixture of both.
Our bunks are well maintained and newly renovated. They all have full bathrooms with individual showers. Each bunk can accommodate 8-12 campers and 2-3 counselors. Ventilation in the bunks is excellent with large windows and ceiling fans. Our professional cleaning staff cleans the bathrooms on a daily basis.
We have an on-site doctor, nursing staff and an office manager staffing our air-conditioned infirmary. All of the medical staff sleeps in the infirmary. We contact parents whenever a camper is kept in the infirmary overnight, is sent to any off camp medical facility, or is put on antibiotics. A hospital is located approximately 15 minutes from camp. Our physician is available to speak with you or your pediatrician about a treatment plan or any other concerns.
