Creative

Our creative areas are designed to allow campers to use their imaginations and express themselves through art. Lokanda is unique in having 5 separate craft buildings along with an outdoor arts area overlooking our lake. Our creative program consists of so many options for campers to explore, including, fine arts, boutique crafts, ceramics, pottery, cooking, dance and our state-of-the-art woodworking shop. Everything is available for our campers to express themselves artistically in so many different ways!

Arts & Crafts

Our arts and crafts program takes place in two areas. Our Lake Art building, which sits overlooking beautiful Lake Loch Ada, is where kids can do wire sculpture, recyclable art, jewelry design, puppet making, book design, and a whole range of fine art projects. Projects are suited for both boys and girls of any age or ability.

Lake Art offers spectacular views and the open-air porch overlooking the lake is an ideal place to create an eye-pleasing water color or two that they will bring home and hang in their room.

The second area, our main Art Center, is more central in camp and is where our campers make spectacular foam board creations, beaded jewelry, cuddly stuffed animals, picture frames, scrapbooks, or any of the three dozen truly unique projects. So many campers enjoy making projects at the shop.

Among the paint, ribbon, fabrics, cardboard, foam board and other supplies, campers can select from many projects or use their imagination and creativity to create something new under the guidance of our great staff. Creativity is encouraged and nurtured as our campers often put their own personal touches on many of the projects offered in the Art Center.

Woodshop

To see it is to believe it. Our woodshop is second to none and the projects our campers can create have no limits. Hanging on the walls, sitting on shelves, or perched atop cabinets all around this air-conditioned facility you will find a huge array of fantastic projects that have been developed over many years.

Clocks, puzzles, Nok-Hockey sets, DVD towers, jewelry boxes, racing cars, and even furniture for their room at home is all common place. It can be done easily because the shop is fully equipped with saws, drills, sanders and any other type of tool necessary to make the campers projects a reality. Our wood shop specialist and assistants carefully supervise and assist the campers in making any project.

Similar to our Arts and Crafts program, our staff encourages creative kids who want to make original projects. What starts as a drawing will soon come to life with the help, assistance and encouragement from our staff.

Ceramics

Once they learn three or four basic clay molding techniques, our campers can create beautiful pieces of ceramics. Since there are no molds, all of the projects at Ceramics come from the imaginations of our campers.

Of course, our specialists will always be there to help our campers design their project and show the children simple tools that can be used to add dimension. If they'd like to undertake more advanced ceramics, they can make a bowl or vase on our potter's wheel.

When you are all through, you'll be adding a rich glaze to your project before it is baked overnight in our huge kilns. Colorful cups, dishes, cloud and star mobiles, dinosaurs, funny faces, trivets, and even Seder plates are some of the projects that our campers have proudly designed on their own.

Theater

At Camp Lokanda there will be many opportunities throughout the summer for us to showcase our campers' theatrical skills. Under the outstanding leadership of our drama specialist, our Drama Department puts on one major play over the course of the summer as well as other valuable drama lessons.

All of the campers who try out will get into one of our performances as a principal actor, singer or member of the singing and dancing troupes.

Each show is a delight to behold as a marvelous cast of characters quickly involve us in their story. Costumes, scenery, loads of musical numbers, and great acting are perfectly combined under what appears to be effortless direction.

While our theatrical productions seem to take center stage, there are many other chances for campers to perform on stage in Talent Shows and Skit Nights.  We also offer theater workshops everyday as part of our campers daily schedule.

Dance

One of the biggest events of any Lokanda season is our annual Dance Show. Thanks to the wonderful personality and creative minds of our staff, we are always amazed by the show.

Our dance instructors enable them to get into each of our camp groups, from our youngest boys and girls to our oldest! With great dance instruction at our studio, our campers learn many steps and dances.

Cooking

With all the cooking shows on television, we found that our campers absolutely love to cook! This year we have remodeled our 'Chef Shack' and doubled its size and added more appliances so that our campers are actively engaged.

Fun and creativity is what drives our cooking programs as our campers learn to make (and more importantly eat) cookies, pizza, muffins and anything else our cooking specialists can think of to engage the children and heighten their interest in cooking.

Our youngest campers seem to like chocolate as a major ingredient!
